Takashi Murakami(Japan) 1962-
Born in Tokyo, Japan. Completed a doctorate in Japanese painting at Tokyo University of the Arts.
Murakami does not worry about the vague importation of the word "art" into Japan, where art and performing arts have been mixed and fused. Rethinking it as a latent concept of culture, he advocated "Super Flat" (2000) and tried to put it into practice.
Focusing on the similarities between the expressions seen in contemporary Japanese subcultures such as anime and manga and the paintings once created by 'maverick' Japanese artists such as Jakuchu Ito, Soga Shohaku, and Kuniyoshi Utagawa, and finds in them the 'avant-garde' of Japanese culture that has been handed down over time.
He has held solo exhibitions in museums around the world, and in 2001 established Kaikai Kiki Ltd, which produces his works and discovers and manages young artists. In addition, he presides over the art event "GEISAI" (2002-). Well-known for collaborations with Louis Vuitton, Kaiyodo, Roppongi Hills, and others. He has received numerous awards, including the Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists (2006). Author of multiple books.
