Yayoi Kusama(Japan) 1929- Born in Nagano Prefecture and currently lives in Tokyo. Kusama began making paintings with polka dot and net patterns in order to escape the visual and auditory hallucinations that had afflicted her since her childhood, later studying nihonga painting at the Kyoto City University of the Arts. After holding her first solo show in 1952, she moved to the US alone in 1957, attracting attention for her monochrome “Infinity Net” paintings and showing her work at international exhibitions all over the world. Having made massive paintings, soft sculptures and environmental sculptures using mirrors and decorative illumination, she organized numerous body painting performances and happenings in the late 60s. After returning to Japan in 1973, Kusama was also active as a novelist and poet. Her major exhibitions include the Japan Pavilion at the 45th Venice Biennale (1993),” Yayoi Kusama”  (Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Pompidou Centre, Tate Modern, Whitney Museum, 2011-2) She is the recipient of numerous honors including the Order of Cultural Merit (2009)  Kusama also received the French Order of Arts and Letters in 2003 and the Order of Culture in 2016. Opened “Yayoi Kusama Museum” in 2017.
