Alena Matêjka(Czech) 1966- Born in Czech Republic in 1966. She obtained master’s degree at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Prague in Glass Department led by Prof. Vladimír Kopecký (1997), consecutively received Ph.D. at the same university (2005). During her academic years, she experienced 2 months study in Glasgow School of Art, Ceramic Department (UK, 1995) and 5-month fellowship at the National Glass Centre and the University of Sunderland with support of the Arts Council North East and Visiting Arts/British Council in London (2003 and 2005), there she made the biggest glass sculptures ever cast in UK. In 2009, she worked as instructor in Pilchuck Glass School (USA), where she gave a course “Aesthetics of Pattern”. Matějka is award-winning artist including First Prize at “Aperto Vetro ’96”, Museo Vetrario, Murano (Venice, Italy, 1996); First Prize at the Young Glass “Michael Bang Award”, Glas Museet (Ebeltoft, Denmark, 1997); František Wolf Annual Award of the Czech Fund of Fine Arts (Czech Republic, 2000). Her works entered into many collections like Toyama Glass Art Museum (Japan), Emaar sculpture Collection (Dubai, UAE), Falun Sculpture Park (Falun, Sweden), Glas Museet (Ebeltoft, Denmark), Institute for International Research in Glass (Sunderland, UK), Landesmuseum (Kassel, Germany), Museum of Decorative Arts (Prague, Czech Republic), Museum of Modern Art (Taipei, Taiwan), etc. She had solo exhibitions in Europe, USA, and Japan as well as many group exhibitions worldwide. She works in Czech Republic, Sweden and Italy. Main materials are stone and glass.
