Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1923, he entered what is now Kyoto City University of Arts in 1942, a classmate of Kazuo Shiraga. After graduating from the Graduate School of Japanese Painting in 1952, he switched to Western-style painting in the 1960s. He exhibited at the 15th Gutai Art Exhibition and became a member of the Gutai Art Association, remaining a core member until the group's disbandment. In his early days, he produced paintings influenced by Art Informel, but gradually grew into an artist who symbolized the late Gutai style, incorporating technology such as hard-edge, kinetic, and light art. His works are housed in collections such as the Ashiya City Museum of Art and History and the Miyagi Prefectural Museum of Art.
