1961年福岡県生まれのデジタルアーティスト。京都大学大学院教授。マサチューセッツ工科大学の先端視覚研究センターのアーティスト・フェローを経て現職。自然に潜む日本美をテクノロジーを用いて作品に表現することを追求し、現在は企業との連携によるアートを基盤とした社会革新にも取り組んでいる。ハイスピードカメラを使って液体の動きを取り込みそれを幻想的に表現する作風は独自の表現として高く評価され、ニューヨークのブロードウェイでの大規模インスタレーションなどが代表作。2025年万国博では無重力を再現し、人間が母親の胎内にいる状態を体験できる装置を展示している。

A digital artist born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1961, he is a professor at Kyoto University Graduate School. He was an artist fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for Advanced Visual Research before assuming his current position. He pursues the expression of Japanese beauty hidden in nature through technology in his works, and is currently working on art-based social innovation in collaboration with companies. His unique style, which captures the movement of liquids using high-speed cameras and expresses them in a fantastical way, has been highly praised, and his representative works include a large-scale installation on Broadway in New York. At the 2025 World Expo, he is exhibiting a device that recreates zero gravity, allowing people to experience what it is like being in the womb.
