1929年長野県生まれ。幼少期から幻覚に悩まされ、それらを絵に描き留めるようになる。京都市立美術工芸学校を経て1957年に渡米し、ニューヨークを拠点にポップアートやミニマリズムに、前衛的なパフォーマンスを実施。水玉や網目模様の反復表現によって自己消滅の哲学を提示する。絵画以外にも「無限の鏡の間」などのインスタレーションや、ソフトスカルプチュアなどの作品を制作。2016年には文化勲章を受章し、現在も世界的に活躍を続ける現代アートを代表する芸術家である。

Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1929, he suffered from hallucinations from an early age and began to capture them in paintings. After graduating from the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, he moved to the United States in 1957 and based in New York, where he engaged in pop art, minimalism, and avant-garde performances. He presents a philosophy of self-annihilation through the repetition of polka dots and mesh patterns. In addition to painting, he has created installations such as the "Infinity Mirrored Room" and soft sculptures. He was awarded the Order of Culture in 2016 and remains a leading contemporary artist active worldwide.
