Chiyu UEMAE
| ( 1920/7/31 - 2018/4/16 ) |
Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1920, he studied Southern painting on his own before switching to Western-style painting. In 1952, he studied under Yoshihara Jiro, and in 1954 participated in the founding of the Gutai Art Association, remaining a member until its dissolution. While working as a crane engineer at a steelworks, he devoted himself to his art, producing layered pointillism paintings made with a painting knife, highly materialistic oil paintings mixed with sawdust and matchsticks, and sewn works made from cloth and thread. He is an artist who has continued to sharply question the relationship between matter and the two-dimensional plane through his meticulous handiwork.
