1922年三重県生まれ。具体初期を代表する作家のひとりで、後年は絵本作家としても活躍。ユーモラスな画風は幅広い層に親しまれた。1955年から1971年まで具体美術協会に所属し、「水の彫刻」や「たらしこみ」の応用、エアブラシによる表現など革新的な技法による作品は高い評価を受ける。海外での発表も早くから行ない、1960 年代にはマーサ・ジャクソン画廊、トリノ芸術センターなどと契約。ヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレなど国際展でも高く評価された。
Born in Mie Prefecture in 1922, he is one of the most representative artists of the early Gutai movement, and in later years was also active as a picture book author. His humorous style of painting was popular with a wide range of people. He was a member of the Gutai Art Association from 1955 to 1971, and his works, which utilize innovative techniques such as "water sculptures," the application of "tarashikomi" (water-based painting), and airbrushing, were highly praised. He began exhibiting overseas early on, and in the 1960s he signed contracts with the Martha Jackson Gallery and the Torino Art Center. His work was also highly praised at international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale.
