1905年大阪府生まれ。戦後日本の前衛美術を牽引した芸術家で、具体美術協会の創設者として知られる。従来の枠にとらわれない自由な表現を追求し、「人の真似をするな」「これまでにないものをつくれ」という理念を掲げ、若い世代の芸術家たちを導いた。自身は円をモチーフとした抽象絵画を制作し、シンプルで力強い造形は国内外で高く評価されている。日本の現代美術史に大きな足跡を残した人物である。

Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1905, he was a leading artist in postwar Japanese avant-garde art and is known as the founder of the Gutai Art Association. He pursued free expression unconstrained by conventional frameworks, and led a younger generation of artists with his principles of "don't imitate others" and "create something that has never been done before." He created abstract paintings with a circular motif, and his simple yet powerful forms have been highly praised both at home and abroad. He is a figure who has left a significant mark on the history of Japanese contemporary art.
